The Norrbotten corridor

The NC4000 enters Norrbotten from the south, follows the coast north through Piteå and Luleå, then turns northeast toward Haparanda and crosses into Finland at Tornio before continuing to Rovaniemi and on to Nordkapp. This page covers the Swedish section: roughly 450 km of riding from the county border to the Finnish crossing.

The route enters Norrbotten County roughly 30 km south of Piteå. Coastal landscape, flat terrain, tailwinds from the Gulf of Bothnia common in summer.

The coastal route passes Piteå. A 12 km inland detour reaches Koler in the Markbygden wind farm area: home to Koler Skolhus, a converted schoolhouse popular with NC4000 riders. Beds, kitchen, outdoor space. The wind turbines visible from the road for 40+ km before and after.

The route crosses from Sweden into Finland at Haparanda/Tornio: twin cities separated by the Torne river and an hour of timezone difference. Stock up: Finnish services from here on to Rovaniemi.
